fashion intensive 2019
Explore the exciting world of wearable technology and create a unique garment or accessory that improves the world around us.
In our one or two week summer courses you will delve into the four pillars of wearable tech: design, engineering, construction and sustainability – learning electrical engineering, coding, pattern-drafting, sewing, bio-fabrication and prototyping while meeting technology entrepreneurs, designers, retailers and touring factories and suppliers in the garment industry.
We teach the actual techniques that are needed to be fashion designers and then inspire our students to use their creativity to solve real world dilemmas, working through iterative design cycles from concept to final prototype. For their capstone project, students work in small groups to design and create a unique piece of wearable technology.
As part of this course, students will:
Learn the iterative design cycle as they refine their ideas from concept to working prototypes.
Gain hands-on experience with pattern-drafting and construction
Learn how to work with Lilypad Arduinos and Flora microcontrollers
Learn to write and develop programs for their microcontroller
Explore the fundamentals of electrical engineering
Develop presentation and communication skills
Meet industry insiders from tech and fashion
